How do I pack my backpack correctly

Wie packe ich meinen Rucksack richtig

Frank Hinrichs |

At Eddy's Adventure, we know that a well-packed backpack makes all the difference between a relaxing trip and an unnecessarily strenuous adventure. The most important packing principle is simple: Leave everything unnecessary at home! But even with minimalist outdoor gear, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure your backpack is perfectly balanced and becomes a faithful companion, not a burden. In this article, we'll show you how to pack your backpack optimally – so your adventure is a complete success!

Distributing weight optimally – the key to successful packing.

The key to a well-packed backpack is proper weight distribution. The center of gravity should be close to the body and ideally at shoulder height. This keeps the backpack stable, prevents it from pulling you backward, and protects your back. For longer trips, the EXPED Lightning 60 is a reliable base because its carrying system is quick to adjust and transfers the load efficiently to the hips.

Lightweight items such as sleeping bags or down clothing go in the bottom compartment.
Pack medium-weight items like clothes at the top and outside.
Place heavy equipment such as tents , provisions, or thick jackets at shoulder height, as close to your back as possible.
Small parts that need to be easily accessible belong in the lid compartment.

Our recommendation: Avoid attaching too many items to the outside of your backpack. This disrupts the balance, increases the surface area exposed to the wind, and can cause it to snag on obstacles. Also, ensure that your belongings are evenly distributed in the side pockets, especially if you're carrying sleeping mats on the outside.

Practical tips for organization and protection in your backpack

To keep things organized and protect your gear from moisture, we recommend dry bags . These bring structure to your backpack and make it easy to find everything quickly. Even better: Waterproof versions often replace rain covers, keeping your luggage dry even if you get caught in a shower. For your cooking setup, a sturdy bag containing your stove, igniter, and cloth is a good idea; our Stoves & Cooking Systems section offers a great selection.

The right packing method for every route

Flat terrain and easy hiking trails
For easier routes, the center of gravity of your backpack can be positioned slightly higher. This ensures an upright posture and comfortable carrying.

Difficult terrain and steep tours
On challenging trails, the load's center of gravity should be lower, closer to your body's center of gravity. This helps maintain stability and reduces the risk of tipping. For bivouac plans or exposed locations, a bivouac sack can provide additional safety.

Avoid common packing errors

A poorly packed backpack with a low center of gravity pulls you backward and puts unnecessary strain on your shoulders. Especially with heavy loads, this can make walking a real ordeal. It also increases the risk of losing your balance on uneven terrain. Use the compression straps – particularly on the EXPED Lightning 60 – to tighten the pack and prevent swaying.
