What you should look out for when choosing a trekking backpack

A good trekking backpack is like a loyal companion on your adventures. It carries all your gear, protects your back, and ensures you can keep hiking with joy even after many kilometers. But what should you look for when choosing a trekking backpack? Let's find out together!

Size and volume – how much space do you really need?

The first question you should ask yourself is: How long will you be gone? For a weekend trip, a 30- to 50-liter backpack is often sufficient. However, if you're traveling for several weeks with a tent and stove, you should opt for a 60- to 80-liter pack.

Comfort and fit – it simply has to fit!

No backpack is perfect if it doesn't fit you. Make sure the backpack is the right size for your body and has adjustable straps, a padded hip belt, and a stable back system. Especially on long hikes, you want the weight to be optimally distributed.

If you're looking for an ultralight backpack for shorter trips, the Pajak XC3 is an excellent choice. Weighing in at just 600g, it has a very technical look and is ideal for carrying lighter gear, as it doesn't have a rigid back panel. Despite its low weight, it offers a volume of 45 liters, making it the perfect companion for a week-long trip. If you limit yourself to a tent weighing a maximum of 1.5kg, a sleeping mat at 400g, and a sleeping bag at around 700g, plus a stove and clothing, you can travel with about 10kg. For this kind of setup, this backpack is simply unbeatable.

Material and weather resistance – does everything stay dry?

A trekking backpack has to withstand a lot: rain, mud, snow, and maybe even a fall. That's why robust materials that won't tear easily are essential. Most models are made of abrasion-resistant nylon or polyester and have a water-repellent coating. But be aware: many backpacks aren't completely waterproof! A rain cover, often included or available separately, is a great solution.

The Mountain Equipment Tupilak 50-75 The backpack, which you can also rent from Eddy's Adventure, is extremely robust and waterproof. Thanks to the lightweight yet durable PACT 300 and 100R material, it can withstand even harsh conditions. Even if you get caught on a rock face, it won't tear open immediately. The high-quality aluminum buckles also remain secure even in extreme sub-zero temperatures. If you're looking for a more compact alternative, the Mountain Equipment Fang 42+ offers similar robustness with a smaller volume.

Compartments and access – how practical is the backpack?

When you're traveling, you don't want to have to constantly rummage through all your luggage. A good backpack design has several compartments:

  • A main compartment for your larger equipment such as sleeping bag and clothing
  • A bottom compartment for quick access to things like your rain jacket
  • Side pockets for water bottles
  • Lid compartments for small items like snacks or your headlamp

A good example is the Deuter Aircontact Lite 50+10 A versatile trekking backpack with an excellent carrying system. This model is available specifically for women and men, with the main differences being the back length, the shoulder straps, and the fit of the hip belt. The front opening is particularly practical, allowing you to access your gear directly without having to rummage through the top opening. This saves time and hassle, especially when you need quick access to your belongings during a trekking break or in the evening when you're exhausted. If you're looking for an even lighter alternative, the Deuter Aircontact Ultra 50+5 is an excellent choice for long tours with minimal weight. This model also comes in gender-specific versions that adjust to body size for optimal comfort. The well-designed front opening on this model also facilitates access to your gear, allowing you to pack more efficiently and stay organized on the trail.

Weight – less is more!

Every gram counts! Especially on long hikes, you don't want to lug around unnecessary weight. Ultralight backpacks exist, but these often offer less comfort and storage space. That's why it's important to find a good middle ground.

The Exped Lightning 60 combines ample volume, quality, and a comfortable carrying system. At just 1230 g, this backpack is extremely lightweight. Of course, there are lighter models, but you always have to consider how much comfort you're willing to sacrifice on longer hikes. With models under 1000 g, the materials become thinner, the carrying systems lighter, and then you simply have to see if the backpack is still comfortable to carry with a significant weight. 10 kg is hardly a problem, but anything over 15 kg can become more challenging with these lightweight backpacks. If you're looking for a smaller alternative, there's the Exped Lightning 45, which offers the same qualities but a more compact volume.

Rent instead of buy – test the perfect backpack for you!

If you're unsure which backpack is right for you, you can rent one before committing to buying. Eddy's Adventure offers a wide selection of high-quality trekking backpacks for rent. This allows you to try out different models and find the one that best suits you and your adventure.

My personal choice: For a long tour with lots of luggage, superb carrying comfort, numerous features, and outstanding quality, I would recommend the Gregory Baltoro 75. The Mountain Equipment Tupilak 50-75 is also a good option. The Tupilak series, as well as the Mountain Equipment Fang 42+, have really impressed me. The Mountain Equipment Tupilak series backpacks, in particular, stand out with their extremely robust outer material, true waterproofing in rain and snow, and the option to remove unnecessary components to reduce weight. Furthermore, the backpacks are very expandable.

So, what are you waiting for? Pack your backpack and dive into your next adventure!
